Paging Dr. Freud. I’m ready to admit something. I’ve suffered from “costume envy” my whole life. My earliest memory of the problem was when I was five, fighting tears as my Mom presented me with a flimsy store bought black cat costume with angry-cat mask. The material was cheap, the mask hideous. The real issue was my older sister, looking resplendent in her bride costume. White dress, white veil, it was so unfair! She looked angelic and I looked like a rabid alley cat! You’d think I’d be happy when, two years later, the beautiful bridal outfit now fit me. She hates buying expensive bags and shoes because she grew up very poor. She’d always say a simple life is always the best life to live. She also considers herself very practical. When it comes to gems, she prefers wearing costume jewelry that closely resembles the real thing. She said she’d rather give the money to charity to help feed poor children instead. My siblings and I respect her wishes and would just buy her inexpensive things during special occasions. It was funny though that on mom’s recent birthday, she opened three presents which all contain fake diamond rings from all her three children. She was thrilled no end.
