Belly up to our bar!
Remember how I said we had a Stock The Bar party thrown for us this past weekend? It was pretty much the best party ever. But I don’t really think it sunk in until after we opened all of our brown paper bags filled with alcohol related goodies, that we would have a crap ton of bar fixin’s at our immediate disposal. Crap. Ton. And we don’t so much have a proper bar to display it all in. Yikes. What’s a girl and a guy to do? Here. I will tell you. In an effort to avoid entering a Twelve Step Program (something that will result in us drinking all of that alcohol on our own), we have decided to implement a much smaller, Two Step Program. Step One: Build a bar. Step Two: Throw a huge party. First things first. Find a way to make our dining room table pathetic excuse for a make shift bar go from this: To this: source ?Why yes, that is a bar. Made out of books. Pure genius if you ask me. And it doubles as a library. It’s a two-fer and everyone knows this girl like those!

Yo, Bro! Belly Up To The Bar And Recite ‘Broetry’

(istockphoto) “Broetry is poetry for dudes,” Brian McGackin writes in the introduction to his new collection of poems. “It’s poetry for people who don’t like poetry.” The slim volume draws inspiration from non-broets, McGackin tells Guy Raz, host of weekends on All Things Considered. Even the cover poem mirrors the famous William Carlos Williams work, “This is Just to Say,” which Williams wrote as a sort-of refrigerator note to his spouse, apologizing for eating plums left in their icebox. “A lot of poets have broetic qualities,” he says. “Robert Frost liked baseball; he wrote about sports. His poetry was always very accessible. Even Shakespeare Shakespeare was just writing about chicks.” Broetry is divided into five loosely autobiographical sections:

Second Helpings The Keg’s prime rib burger is reason to belly up to the bar By Laura Shunk Fri., Aug. 26 2011 at 12:59 PM Categories: Second Helpings Hunter StevensOn the bar menu: the prime rib burger.?After exploring the reinvented hamburgers at both Crave and Highland Tap and Burger for this week’s reviews, I decided to belly up to the bar at the Keg in LoDo before a concert. Stepping into the restaurant, one of many in a Canadian chain of meat temples, is like a trip back to the late 80s or early 90s, with the dark wood, oppressive color scheme and ostentatious paintings of martini glass-holding women in slinky dresses. And the prime rib burger is out of the same era, which is to say an era when prime rib dinners were a popular way to spend an evening out. Luckily, the burger is timeless. Topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, mayonnaise and a slab of cheddar, the toppings didn’t exactly break new ground.

Beer Belly: Craft Beer Bar Opens in Koreatown
Bar Openings & Closings Beer Belly: Craft Beer Bar Opens in Koreatown By Caroline on Crack , Mon., May 16 2011 @ 1:03PM Categories: Bar Openings & Closings , Bars Caroline on Crack Jimmy and Yume Han in front of Beer Belly; artwork by MR44. ? Unlike most young newlyweds who jump on the baby track once they get married, Jimmy and Yume Han decided to open a business instead. “We knew we wanted to go into business together, but we didn’t know what,” Yume said. “But Jimmy basically started falling in love, all of a sudden, about three years ago, with craft beer.” So he gave up his job in real estate and she gave up hers in fashion and they pooled their life savings. The result is Beer Belly , a craft beer bar opening up this Friday, May 20, in Koreatown, in a 1,500-square-foot space formerly occupied by a Chinese restaurant not far from the Wiltern.

It’s All About the Beer: Bellying Up to the Bar at Mohawk Bend
70+ taps at Mohawk Bend Photo by Paul Bartunek for LAist) With over 70 craft beers on tap, a former movie theatre as a space, and plenty of veggie and vegan dishes on their largely locally-sourced menu, Mohawk Bend earned its rep as Echo Park’s food/drink scene and be seen spot before they even opened. Recently, we headed back to taste drive the food and drinks, and agree that when it comes to light bites and beer (beer, beer!) Mohawk Bend really delivers. It’s noisy, it’s crowded, it’s 9 p.m. on a Wednesday, and everyone is mouthing the words to an old Flaming Lips song. Bodies are three deep in the narrow aisle between a row of tables and the bar, where an impressive bank of brew taps wait patiently beneath a glow of purplish light. You might have to yell your order, if you’re here for just a beer, but the selection is worth the shouting. Pliny the Elder, perhaps, or a Smoked Porter or Ruedrich’s Red Seal Ale? Quaff to your heart’s content.

California bellies up to the bar for infused liquor
Cocktail lovers can rejoice, as California Jerry Brown today signed a bill ending the state’s ban on infused alcoholic beverages. SB 32, by state Sen. Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, updates state law to recognize the widespread artisanal practice of infusing small amounts of alcohol with fruits, vegetables, herbs or spices for use in cocktails. The fight for the bill dates back to early last year, when state liquor regulators started cracking down on Bay Area bars. Leno said today he’s pleased Brown saw the need to change the regulations. In San Francisco and other cities where tourism is critical to the local economy, restaurant owners have been asked to stop serving infused cocktails in the name of an outdated law written decades ago, he said.
